UK Government Confirms Solicitor Apprenticeship Funding Until Age 22

The UK government has confirmed that it will continue funding solicitor apprenticeships, but only for aspiring solicitors up to the age of 22.

Previously announced plans by the Department for Education suggested the removal of funding for Level 7 apprenticeships, which include solicitor training. However, the department has now stated that funding will remain available for individuals aged 16 to 21, as well as for current apprentices. These revised funding rules will take effect starting January. Anyone who begins a Level 7 apprenticeship before the end of the year will still be funded under the existing arrangements.

The Law Society responded positively to the decision but called on the government to extend funding for those over 21.

Richard Atkinson, president of the Law Society, stated:
"Level 7 solicitor apprenticeships continue to be the only route outside of university to qualify as a solicitor due to specific qualifications set by the Solicitors Regulation Authority. Apprenticeships play a vital role in promoting social mobility. We also hope to see these apprenticeships brought over to Wales, to allow young people the same valuable opportunities."

In the 2023-24 period, nearly half of the 1,300 individuals who started solicitor apprenticeships were between the ages of 20 and 24.

Atkinson further emphasized:
"Continuing to fund solicitor apprenticeships after the age of 21 is critical if we are to support recruitment within the legal profession."

He also highlighted the need for focused recruitment efforts in smaller regional areas:
"Offering apprenticeships in these areas encourages young people to look for opportunities locally, knowing they do not have to move to bigger cities to work in law."

"We hope the government supports the funding of solicitor apprenticeships past the age of 21 and demonstrates its commitment to the legal sector, a proven driver of growth in England and Wales."
